Highland Pacific Golf Course's lush fairways thread through a majestic landscape
of forest, rock, fescue, and natural water features. After opening 18 holes in 2010,
it has become a must-play in Victoria, whether you play the whole golf course from
6,603 yards, or decide you might have more fun from a shorter distance. Its driving
range features a two-tiered tee line of covered and heated stalls, long and short game
practice areas, lights for evening practice, and real terrain targets.
The fifth hole is the definition of a short, tough par 4. The view from the tee is
spectacular with the Olympic Mountains in the distance, but don't be drawn in. You
must hit two very precise shots to hit this green in regulation.
Off the tee, the ideal drive will have you targeting the 150-yard marker; go too far and
your ball will land either on a downward slope or in the water. On the left side sits a
well-located bunker that you want to avoid.
Club selection is key for the second shot since it requires a one- or two-club
difference to the elevated green surface, which looks very small from 150 yards out.
Many golfers under-club and will find the bunker on the right side; any ball hit right of
that could easily disappear because of the 50-yard drop to the water below. A bailout
area left of the green's surface is the decision for many golfers who are unsure of wind
conditions and their shot-making ability. Birdies are always possible, but it's probably
best to take your par and run.
