First-time visitors find it hard to believe that Northlands Golf Course is a municipal
course, because it feels like a private facility. Owned and operated by the District of
North Vancouver, it is considered one of metro Vancouver's most challenging. Les
Furber designed the 398-yard first hole as an attention grabber, equally scenic and
complex, a perfect introduction to the course, which demands that you arrive ready
to play.
With water approximately 200 yards to your left and a narrow landing area to your
right, it naturally causes a bit of hesitation. Players hitting a low- to mid-iron tee shot
will find themselves safe but facing a difficult second shot: a downhill lie hitting to
an elevated green. Players pulling out their three-wood or driver, if successful, will
have a great chance to hit the green in regulation due to the flat lie and proximity to
the green. The staff tip: grip it and rip it. Once on the two-tiered green, it can easily
be a three-putt if you are not positioned below the hole. A bogey is not uncommon,
so making par or a birdie will definitely give you the satisfaction and confidence to
venture on.
Open for 18-hole play since 1997, the course presents a well-formulated mix of
complicated holes, friendly scenic downhill vistas, and strategically located hazards.
Suited to all levels, each hole has four sets of tees and the greens are generous and
relatively level. The Northlands experience is further enhanced by the unspoiled
feeling of the forested mountainside site.
