Although the beautiful setting of rugged hills and tall fescue is most reminiscent of
links golf, a lake defines the entire left side of the 10th hole at Rivershore Estates
and Golf Links, just east of Kamloops. A master at incorporating natural elements,
architect Robert Trent Jones used the water, a stand of trees, and natural mounds to
create this challenging and visually stunning par 4.
Laying parallel to the South Thompson River, the 10th plays either downwind or into
the wind. With the green a distant goal at the end of the lake—402 yards from the
back tees—and the wind, proper club selection and placement of the tee shot are
crucial. A stand of trees guards the right side at just over 200 yards. A series of
three fescue-covered hillocks beyond the trees reinforce Jones' encouragement of a
layup shot between the trees and the lake. The fairway is barely 30 yards wide in the
landing area, demanding a precise tee shot.
The ideal drive leaves a second shot over the lake of 120 to 140 yards. Jones
thoughtfully provided a relatively flat green of more than 6,000 square feet for that
intimidating shot and sloped it gently back to front. On the left, he carved two massive
bunkers into the mound than runs behind the green and added another large one on
the right. At Rivershore's 10th, the view from the fairway is as dramatic as the shot to
be played.
