At times, playing Tetherow is like playing John Wayne or the Lone
Ranger in an old Western movie. With the tee shot on the 13th
hole being partially blind, you survey the glorious high-desert
landscape looking for some direction, perhaps a puff of smoke
in the distance. Coming back to reality, the caddy's tip is to aim
at Broken Top Mountain. So much for the movies, but what a
fascinating place to play golf.
Two large pines mark the left side of this wide fairway, but danger
lurks for the longer hitters as they can hit through the fairway
and into the brush or a deceptive bunker. The second shot on
this 588-yard par 5, a layup for most, should be well short of the
green since there is no need to flirt with the water.
Central Oregon basalt is on full display in the middle of the
hole while providing a chute to play through. A snakelike
bunker extends down the left creating one of the most dramatic
snapshots on the course.
Members know that you can use the contours on the right to feed
the ball to the center of the green. The back section of the green
runs away from the player potentially ending in disaster.
