The sixth hole at Tetherow Golf Club shows off the best of what the acclaimed course
has to offer: stunning beauty and creative, challenging golf. The course's designer,
David McLay Kidd, calls it one of the most enthralling holes he has created. It has
become known as the anchor of Kidd's Corner, a daunting four holes starting at
the third.
The elevated tees on the sixth offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
But it is the decision-making that makes this hole so memorable. This is a true split-
fairway, risk/reward hole. The lower left fairway skirts the water on the left and is
guarded by a ridge of clumps and bunkers on the right, while the right fairway is
comparatively generous but leaves a blind second shot. Members know that they can
play to the right fairway and still have a good opportunity to run their approach shot
to the green, but first-time players find the approach shot intimidating.
The elevated green requires a deft touch to get near the pin. With three different tiers,
getting close to the pin is a must when chasing birdie. The toughest pin is a nasty
little section of the green front-right that can often frustrate the uninitiated. The back
of the green slopes hard to the left, and any approach shot through the green leaves
a daunting up and down.
It's a spectacular hole where the best decision might be to play it again and again.
