The use of the phrase "signature hole" is despised by most golf course architects,
who would rather be judged on the totality of their work rather than the compelling
look of one hole. But some holes stand alone. Renowned architect David McLay
Kidd, who did the first golf course at Bandon Dunes as well as the Castle Course at
St. Andrews, Scotland, doesn't mind the term "cover-girl hole," and if Tetherow has
one, it is the 17th.
The 182-yard hole sits down in a pumice quarry and holds one of the smallest greens
Kidd has ever built, measuring less than 3,000 square feet. The exposed pumice
throughout the hole is the real eye-catcher, providing an intimidating carry off the
tee. The giant backboard left and long of this green is the true target, allowing the
ball to feed close to almost any pin position. The fun of this hole is watching what
happens after the ball lands, as the friendly contours provide exciting finishes. Avoid,
if you can, the bunker on the right, for it is deep and gnarly and can provide some
unruly lies.
Many have called this the best inland hole in Oregon, and it definitely lives up to the
hype. The 17th is Tetherow's true "cover-girl."
