Huntsman Springs, a masterful blending of water and sand in the shadow of three
mountain ranges, has been labeled by its designer, David McLay Kidd, as the "the
pinnacle of my career." The drop-dead beauty of the 11th hole is matched only by the
hole itself, a stern par 3 where club selection is paramount.
You need a swing that will get you pin high from tee boxes ranging from less than 100
yards to almost 200; a club that will carry the pond in front of the hole and hopefully
find the proper section of a green that is bisected front to back by a ridge. Get on the
wrong side of the ridge, and three putts can quickly curb the euphoria of the moment.
If the pin is on the left, a shot that catches that section can follow a funnel effect to
the hole, where birdies and even aces are possible.
Huntsman Springs' design, included on many new best course lists, matches its
mountains—no small achievement in this part of the country. Kidd moved four million
cubic yards of sand and gravel to create the humps and bumps of a links course,
and corralled the snow runoff to add numerous water hazards. Everywhere there are
touches of Old World authenticity thanks to the wavy fescue grasses that surround
the bunkers.
