Peter Jacobsen is the face of golf in Oregon; a Portland native who insists on living
there even though on tour and while other pros from northern climes move to Arizona
and Florida. In the early '90s, Jacobsen designed Oregon Golf Club in the sprawling
hills above the Willamette River, so near and yet so far from downtown Portland. He
wanted to embrace the Oregon of his youth and the great courses of his travels,
especially those in Scotland. His 7,052-yard course is sculpted from an expansive
swath of farmland in the shadows of the Cascade Mountains.
While Jacobsen cleverly blended the best of Scotland and Oregon, there are
always the reminders of Augusta National, from the Oregon Golf Club logo—whose
inspiration Jacobsen allegedly drew from the restroom wallpaper at Augusta—to the
hundreds of roses on the par-3 12th that remind some of the sixth hole at Augusta.
The 12th is a beautiful but devilish hole, with its narrow green perched on a hillside.
Any shot to the green either makes it or doesn't—there is no in-between.
Still it is the beauty and not the beast that you remember. It was the favorite hole of
club founder Tadamasa Ohno, who is remembered with a plaque on the hole's set
of silver tees. Along with the thousands of roses on the grounds, there are stunning
views of Mount Hood, Mount Adams, and Mount St. Helens. Oregon Golf Club was
the home of the Fred Meyer Challenge and also served as the site of the NCAA
women's championship in 1994, and both the Oregon Amateur and Oregon Open.
