The par-3 13th hole at The Golf Club at Black Rock is not the most difficult hole on
the course, although standing on the tee will cause even the best of player to lose
focus. The 155-yard hole is gloriously draped with five 40-foot waterfalls cascading
down huge black rocks left of the green. If that isn't enough, large boulders and a
lone pine tree frame the right side of the hole. Stunning views of boat traffic on Lake
Coeur d'Alene serve as an overall backdrop.
The hole provides two challenges to the player: Pick the right club from the elevated
tee and don't get wrapped up in the surroundings. Named the best new private
course in America by Golf Digest in 2003, Black Rock is an aesthetic masterpiece;
a 7,135-yard mountain course crafted by designer and architect Jim Engh. It is a
scenic trail of bent grass fairways and greens navigating through native basalt rock
formations overlooking the lake.
With tightly mowed fairways and a few bowl-shaped greens, delicate and creative
shot-making is of the highest order. Even though it is a relatively late addition to the
rankings, Black Rock has consistently been among Golf Digest's top 100 courses
in America.
