High in the hills above the town of Mount Vernon is Eaglemont Golf Club, known for its
spectacular views and layout. John Steidel did the design in the early '90s, and it was
a rigorous test of his abilities to negotiate elevation changes and intruding wetlands.
The 14th hole, with a commanding view of Mount Baker to the north, does both with
ample adventure, skirting two ravines and encouraging the best players to go for the
green on the par 5 in two.
There are five sets of tees on the 14th—from 552 yards to 450 yards—to address
different abilities, but in almost every case the first ravine must be crossed with the
second shot. To take on the second ravine is sure risk and reward. Laying up near a
stump to the left of the hole and avoiding the second ravine are prudent. Even if the
ravines are avoided, the green is protected by a bunker on the left and has a severe
slope from back to front. The key third shot, from near the stump, is still a good 150-
yard poke.
Eaglemont, often rated among the 10 best public courses in Washington, is in its own
world; every hole isolated and unique. Over its two decades, trees and bunkers have
been removed to make the course more playable, but no less spectacular. Speaking
of spectacular, a sprawling clubhouse was also added to properly begin and end
each round of golf.
