When does a slight dogleg reveal a slight miracle? After rounding
the bend at the sixth hole at Mount Si Golf Course. It's the start
of a neck-craning look from the Snoqualmie Valley floor to the
tip of Mount Si, a little over 4,000 feet straight up. About 10,000
hikers per year attempt the climb to the top—fewer than half
actually make it. And if the mountain doesn't captivate, then the
neighboring herd of elk just might.
For this is an amazing place; a pleasant public golf course at
the base of the snowy Cascade Range and yet only a 30-minute
drive from the steel-and-glass landscape of downtown Seattle.
Standing on the tee, tall trees and surges of the south fork of the
Snoqualmie River are to the right. The obvious play is to the left,
and long hitters can drive the ball through the fairway. The hole
dares you to get as close to the green as possible with the drive,
as it narrows with poplar trees on the left and a big evergreen
on the right. The more prudent play might be to hit a 5-wood or
3-wood short of the trouble and play a short iron to the green.
There are no bunkers near the green, just a swale in front to
contain shots that fall short. The sixth isn't meant to be the
toughest hole on the course—just the most beautiful.
