The third hole at Overlake Golf and Country is the showpiece entrance hole and the
first hole that members and guests see upon driving down the hill into the club. It
is an unnerving par 3 over water to a wide and heavily contoured green. While any
shot over water will test your nerves, the real challenge on this hole comes on the
undulating putting surface where a shot played to the right side of the green can
easily result in a three-putt.
The third hole underwent a renovation in 2007 following a massive windstorm that
swept across western Washington in December 2006. The storm toppled 50 trees
and destroyed the tees on the third hole. The club decided to renovate the entire hole
except for the extremely interesting green surface. The tees were raised and leveled;
the stairs and edges were removed to create a clear aesthetic; and the fairway was
raised to improve drainage. The remaining storm-damaged poplars were removed
from the roadside and finally the bunkers were rebuilt to restore their shape and
improve playability. The result was a hole in which the members take great pride. It
completes "The Loop" of the first three holes that return to the clubhouse and sets the
stage for the challenges ahead.
Overlake's history on its current site dates back to 1927, when Francis L. James
designed the 6,500-yard golf course, which evolved into the current design of the
course completed in 1953 by the legendary A.V. Macan. Evolving with its classic
history, Overlake has one of the youngest memberships in the Pacific Northwest and
offers a modern, full menu of activities, including golf, aquatics, tennis, and a very
active social calendar.
