Rarely do courses fit so perfectly with the terrain that it seems
that the land was just patiently waiting through the millennia for
them to be built. Greywolf Golf Course is such a course. Architect
Doug Carrick created this 7,140-yard mountain masterpiece by
matching astounding views with shot values and playability every
unforgettable step of the way. He saved his best for hole 6, which
he envisioned when he first walked amid the towering pines and
mountains.
Carrick's spectacular par 3 is aptly named "Cliffhanger." In the
shadows of the Canadian Rockies, with tree-covered mountain
slopes as a background and the jagged peaks of the Purcell
Mountains creating a majestic horizon, the green is perched
on the cliff's edge, 150 feet above the Toby Creek Valley. To
the west stretches Hopeful Canyon. From any of the distinctly
separate tees, which range from 77 yards to 200 yards to offer as
much hope as you need, the mountains and the yawning canyon
create an optical illusion.
The sixth green is actually massive, the second largest on the
course at 7,500 square feet. In different circumstances, the large
green with two bunkers in front and the surrounding apron of
rough would hardly be intimidating. But in this quintessentially
BC setting, Cliffhanger is very intimidating, and by any measure,
one of the finest par 3s in golf.
