On the shores of Little Shuswap Lake lies the pride of the enterprising Little Shuswap
Indian Band: Talking Rock Golf Course & Quaaout Lodge. The course opened in
2007 on the site known by the First Nations as "Land of the Great Spirit."
Course architects Graham Cooke and Wayne Carleton welcomed the task of
developing a design that honours heritage and reflects natural abundance. The
result: a 7,129-yard, par-72 course that's both challenging and accessible. Well-
spaced fairways make the most of topography and natural growth.
Traditions of the past are represented, with Aboriginal art placed throughout the
course. Sightlines from the elevated tee box on Talking Rock's signature seventh give
little warning that there is a bear lurking in the fairway bunker—the outline of a grizzly
bear in the centre of the sand trap, to serve as a spiritual reminder.
Three large fairway bunkers line the right side, making it a hole where you can grip
it and rip it from the elevated tee box. Place your second shot in the middle of the
fairway: anything left and the pine trees will block your approach to the oval green;
anything right and you're looking at a complex third shot—over two right-hand
bunkers. Prevailing winds off Little Shuswap Lake have captured many a ball and
mean at least a club difference. Watch your approach. A ridge running through the
middle of this small green makes the downhill portion quicker than it looks.
