Desert Blume Golf Club's first hole is whimsically named
"The Forest" for the solitary tree that stands in contrast to the
surrounding cacti, sagebrush, and native grasses in the coulée
formed by Seven Persons Creek. The remarkable natural site is
the ideal setting for the Gary Browning-designed course.
The third hole brings all of the desert and links-style elements
into play. The creek meanders the valley floor and flows across
fairways and in front of greens 10 times, twice on the third hole
alone. Named "Spotted Leopard Frog" for the species that is
threatened elsewhere yet thrives here, the hole is a slight dogleg
right and a true three-shot par 5 with the prevailing wind blowing
into the players. The first shot from three of the four tee boxes
must carry the creek, crossing the fairway about 100 yards from
the back tees. The creek then traces the left side of the hole
before cutting back across the fairway about 180 yards from the
20-yard-wide front to the green.
The massive putting surface is a full 41 yards deep, has three
tiers, and is well-guarded with bunkers on the right, left, and front.
The number one handicap hole is a beautiful and challenging
welcome to Desert Blume.
