Inspired West Coast Homes
MODERN MEDITERRANEAN
Mountain View, CA
Optimizing space was an important aspect of our design approach
for the Modern Mediterranean home project. It allowed us to balance
improved function and experience for the family with the city planning
department's challenging criteria. In collaboration with contractor
Mara Construction, the home's transformation entailed a gut remodel
and second-floor addition, using a combination of contemporary
architectural details and a Mediterranean aesthetic. It was a dramatic
overhaul that completely changed the layout of the house. We spent a
great deal of time with the family to get to know them and create the
design together. Our results brought together form and function, with
living spaces that flow and connect from inside to outside. The layout
includes a sunny front-yard seating area off the kitchen where the
family visits with neighbors, and a secluded rear patio and garden off
the great room. The primary bedroom suite features a Japanese bath
and a private roof terrace with built-in seating, which is screened from
view by a trellis, plantings, drapery, and lanterns.
