Washington State's Wiser Lake is a small, picturesque body of water
just a few miles south of Lynden. When I designed the house, I want-
ed to create something that complemented the natural surrounding
beauty and didn't try to compete with it. The Wiser Lake House takes
advantage of natural materials that make sense in this setting: wood,
glass, and metal. The rooms are understated, modern, and warm. We
wanted to capture sweeping outdoor views throughout the home
so we opted for large windows in the living spaces and many of the
private areas, as well. There is a sense of openness and freedom when
you are in the house, which I like to think of as an extension of the
feeling you have while on the lake itself.
It was important that the rear exterior of the house offer plenty of
outdoor living and entertainment space. What's the point of living
on a lake if you can't enjoy the scenery? We created covered and un-
covered patios for this reason. Here, the family can have dinner, host
large gatherings, or just enjoy a quiet cup of coffee in the morning.
The butterfly roof, strong lines, and deep overhangs add the perfect
touch of drama to the design. Even though neighbors aren't far from
the house, the property has a quiet sense of serenity because the
backyard opens up directly to the water.
