SHIP TO SHORE
Tulalip, WA
After a long and well-respected career captaining U.S. Navy ships and submarines, this homeowner and his wife retired onshore with the goal of looking
back across the waters he had once sailed. This three-bedroom vacation home, nestled into the hillside about an hour north of Seattle, replaced a small
block house on a waterfront lot held by his family for more than 100 years. The original plan was to do a modest renovation and addition, but once
the project got going it became clear that a full rebuild would be necessary. The new home required an extensive coordination of complex shoreline
setback requirements to find a solution that gave every living space a panoramic view of the water. A variety of open and covered outdoor spaces,
including a picturesque dining gazebo, provide many opportunities to enjoy the waterfront views through the seasons. An avid DIYer, the homeowner
has a nicely outfitted workshop hidden underneath the deckāhe even completed most of the home's trim and finish-out, as well as all the electrical,
himself. Now, the couple's children and grandchildren are able to visit often and continue the family tradition of treasuring this property.
