151 PAR TWO Seattle, WA The Seattle floating home community, limited now to the remaining 520 float slips, is among the largest in the world. With humble beginnings in the late nineteenth century, they have now become highly sought out for the unique opportunity they offer to live on the water in an urban environment. The diminishing number of those awaiting a major renovation makes them especially valuable. When this young couple bought the worst house on the dock, everyone was glad someone would finally replace the old eyesore. The husband had two non-negotiable requirements: a covered deck with a large, retractable window through which to watch sports on the living room TV, and a rooftop putting green to hone his short game. For her, extensive cabinetry and storage to put away daily items for a clutter-free environment was also a must. The design strategy arranged the personal spaces on the main level, where privacy was easier to control, and put the living spaces in a large open plan on the second level, where views to the city skyline and surrounding lake environs could be had across adjacent rooftops. Light-colored finishes and carefully placed windows provide a bright, contemporary interior. This house is one of more than a dozen floating home projects that we have designed.
