183 Far from your typical single-family home, this Vancouver residence is designed with separate living quarters to accommodate three families and three generations, all under one roof. By splitting the house into multiple levels and creating side-by-side spaces, the design intends to create privacy between families and yet still maintain open and welcoming communal areas where everyone in the family could gather. The ground level of this custom house is designed as a communal space with a shared living room, dining room, and kitchen, while a separate suite is also strategically placed on this level for the grandparent who may be challenged with mobility in the coming years. The upper floors are split into half levels, with each level housing one of the two co- owners and families separately. The concept of split-levels helps provide the notion of privacy for each family but at the same time, because of its proximity, reinforces the togetherness of the two families. The lower level is designed to be a totally separate and self-contained rental suite for yet another family. The exterior of the house is cladded with articulating metal sidings and panels instead of natural wood sidings because of longevity and maintenance concerns. With the intention to relate this contemporary West Coast home to its context, horizontal aluminum siding with a traditional faux wood finish is chosen to wrap around the first level of the house. In contrast, the second level is cladded with standing-seam metal panels which extend up the roof to form a seamless and contemporary architectural element. The concept of mixing the traditional and contemporary elements on the architectural expression serves as a reflection of the different generations residing harmoniously within.
