Great design is balanced proportions and flow of space with careful se-
lection of colors and material, and when you hit that sweet spot, it just
feels right. That was certainly the case for the West Vancouver Beach
House. Built by Kerr Construction, the custom design-and-build project
reveals careful attention to even the tiniest detail. We achieved a warm
yet open feel with a double-sided, indoor-outdoor fireplace and folding,
sliding doors. It makes the living space contiguous with the outdoors to
create an ideal entertaining space. I like to pull in elements of a home's
site and natural surroundings, which I did here with subtle interior design
details and finishes that mimic the nearby water and beach. You'll find
details such as the 350-million-year-old seabed fossils mounted above
the stone fireplace, the primary bathroom tiles that give the impres-
sion of shimmering sand under your feet, and the suspended fishing net
chandelier above the primary bathroom tub dripping with crystal 'water'
drops. Combining bleached oak flooring with the dark walnut staircase
handrails creates visually dramatic, sweeping lines along with a sea in-
spired art installation on the curved wall of the staircase. Continuing the
cohesive flow of the details throughout the home, rich walnut accents
and tonally soft, bleached-oak, wide-plank flooring smoothly blend with
natural materials such as salt stone backsplashes and Bianco Chateau
quartzite countertops to achieve the nature-inspired look.
