Located in the prestigious Bird Streets of the Hollywood Hills, near
Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, our design for the Swallow Residence
contains gestural, rusticated stone walls that serve as an important
element both structurally and aesthetically. They rise beautifully from
the site and break with the axis of the adjacent streets to run parallel
to the view corridor on this interior corner lot. The walls form the parti
for special ordering of the interior spaces. Public, communal rooms are
wrapped around and through these walls, but the walls also amplify
and focus the homeowners and their guests on the nearby city view.
In addition, the walls also serve to heighten the house's privacy from the
surrounding neighbors on what was previously a very exposed corner
property. Like most clients, these homeowners wanted some seclusion
and solitude from the street and busy surroundings. Combined with
angled roof lines that both whimsically tip and point to the view beyond,
the walls also provide a crucial link between indoor and outdoor spaces,
which is an ideal feature for entertaining friends and family and hosting
large parties. Finally, the front and back yards meld together into one
courtyard formed by the L-shaped house, maximizing space and view.
