Set on a small but prominent urban corner lot, this 3,700-square-
foot residence creates a spacious living environment and a timeless
architectural addition to the eclectic beach homes of Venice, California.
The open, loft-like interior encompasses the entry, dining, kitchen, and
lounge areas and connects to a small private yard through large sliding-
glass doors. Each zone within the open areas of the home has been
articulated by differing floor levels, finish materials, ceiling and lighting
configurations, as well as window scale and orientation. We designed
a rooftop deck with panoramic views that provides extended outdoor
entertainment opportunities.
The double-height volume is the spatial focus of the home,
encompassing the entry and dining areas and allowing natural light to
extend deeper into the center of the house. The second-level walkway,
home office, family room, and media room overlook this double-height
volume, from which access is provided to three bedroom suites.
We wanted to create privacy on this prominent corner lot, which we've
maintained by surrounding solid fences, carefully placed landscaping,
and a raised-concrete planter at the entry. The exterior is articulated
with a base of cedar siding supporting an upper mass of smooth
integrally colored plaster. The second-floor windows lie primarily within
a horizontal band, which is further articulated by corrugated metal
panels encircling the perimeter.
