6 Inspired West Coast Homes The Westwood Residence sits on a typical mid-block site in a neighborhood filled with Tudor and Spanish-style homes. Built for a couple with two boys, the house provides an open living area and a broad spatial connection to its small, private rear yard on a sloping, restrictive lot. The architectural vocabulary of the home is both modern and timeless and is articulated by a palette of materials that provide a warm and intimate environment for its residents and guests. A mantra of "modern and cozy" was a constant theme through the design process. Our design solution includes the creation of a three-level home on a site that slopes gently up from front to rear. The main level of the house is the second level, housing dining, living, and kitchen functions in a continuously open space that is level with the rear yard. Each area on this level is articulated with varying ceiling and lighting configurations, creating several varying zones within an otherwise open floor plan. Expansive wood-framed glass sliding door panels connect these spaces to the rear yard which is defined by tall hedges and conceptualized as a "green" room. The top level of the house contains bedrooms and home offices, while the lower level contains the enclosed garage and a multipurpose playroom for children. A double-height living room is the heart of the home and visually connects the second and third levels. A dramatically curving wall leads from the entry through the main living area, reflecting how one moves through the home, and continues up through to the top level dynamically connecting all the main spaces of the structure. Naturally colored oak and soft neutral tones dominate as a material theme throughout the home from oak flooring, cabinets and slats to light colored quartzite counters and limestone wall cladding.
