4 Inspired West Coast Homes Located north of San Francisco, the Deer Park residence was designed and built for a sloped V-shaped lot on a site was essentially divided in half by a natural depression in the land that served as a drainage system. The environment presented challenges for my team but also gave us an opportunity to build something completely singular with stunning views. Our approach for this home combines practicality and environmental sensitivity to make as little impact on the site as possible. The main dwelling is placed along the slope on the northeast side of the lot to minimize the grading and maximize the views of Mount Tamalpais to the southeast. On the southwest section of the property and the opposite side of the natural depression, a separate two-car garage and ADU sits and preserves the natural flow of water through the site. We organized the layout to provide a sense of procession where visitors enter the property at one corner and eventually arrive at the opposite, discovering the modern interior spaces and grandiose views. There is a strong axis from the front door to the terrace. The home's driveway begins near the garage and runs almost flat along the edge of the property, parallel with the road, connecting the two buildings. We designed the house with energy efficiency and scenic views in mind. The implied hallway provides the central access point for all areas of the home and serves as the main artery of the layout. The upper level is a primary living space and where most of the day-to-day tasks take place. Photographs by Jamie Leasure Designed by DNM Architecture, Sausalito, CA DEER PARK San Rafael, CA
