We believe that every project provides a conduit for the exploration of
human experience as it relates to the built environment and the emo-
tional response to a specific space, and the Broadview Residence is no
exception. Located on a busy street in north Seattle, the home was de-
signed to create a private and relaxing oasis for the homeowner. Our
primary goal was to create a home that complemented the scale and
fabric of the existing neighborhood while providing a private, south-fac-
ing courtyard that takes full advantage of natural light and extends the
interior living space.
The home is designed with strategically placed public spaces, including
a formal entry courtyard, arranged near the street, acting as a buffer for
the remainder of the home. Utilizing the natural topography allowed us
the opportunity to explore spatial volumes by varying ceiling and floor
heights. A subdued interior material palette aids in creating the peace-
ful environment. Stained cedar walls cleverly conceal the home's storage
areas. A roof-top deck is positioned at the highest point on the site maxi-
mizing western views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.
