Inspired Modern Living
With its significant remodel, this residence — located on a working equestrian ranch —departs from its
previous nondescript aesthetic and disjointed layout to provide the owners with a masterful blend of
rustic and modern styles and a beautiful integration of the indoors and the outdoors.
The refurbishment of the existing home includes updated finishes, fixtures, and hardware. However,
the great room addition constitutes the most substantial change. With its open plan, this single volume
simplifies the circulation and fosters a communal family atmosphere by integrating the main living uses.
The previous kitchen and dining room is now the welcoming entry foyer, which opens directly to the
addition, seamlessly connecting old with new. The great room features an 18-foot wide by 10-foot tall
thermally broken steel lift-and-slide glass door system that stows away in a wall cavity when open,
blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living areas. Aligning the expansion joints of the interior
concrete floor slab and the exterior concrete patio slab further bridges these spaces.
The stone fireplace anchors the great room to provide a visual and social focal point. The reclaimed
wood clad walls and ceiling — together with the heft, texture, and warmth of the stone — contrast
and balance the openness and lightness of the glass door system and the coolness of the polished
concrete floor.
