209 Our clients asked us to create an "extraordinary home" — inspired by a favorite Netflix series, "The World's Most Extraordinary Homes" — that would interact beautifully with the natural environment and cantilever into the treetops, overlooking Lake Wylie in Charlotte, North Carolina. At the same time, they wanted to stay grounded without stairs to climb so they could age in place in their new dream home. So, we cut a set of stone walls into the hill and placed the Gerendák Residence on top, creating level terraces in the hillside. We let the home careen over the artificial cliff, providing views from all the primary spaces. The homeowners enter on a ground floor that transitions to the sensation of hovering in thin air at the edges of the structure. This showpiece of a home also embodies sustainability and eco-consciousness, in addition to being a design triumph.
