Inspired Modern Living
With mountain views to the south and east, this family weekend home in Upstate New
York is located on a gently rolling site with wooded areas flanking the property. Local
ordinances restricted the building placement on the site, so the home was conceived
as a cube-like structure that emerged out of the sloping site — as if it were a piece of
underlying rock strata that was exposed after years of erosion. The metal roof lines
deliberately slope to mimic the topography.
The tree-shaded courtyard and main entry leads to a large great room and reveals the
beautiful view. This multi-purpose room includes the main living area as well as the
dining, kitchen, and a media room. A large stone terrace with a fire pit is located off the
great room for social activities with access to a swimming pool, hot tub, and an outdoor
kitchen for dining and entertaining — all oriented to the view.
Green features include a solar system with photovoltaic collectors to supplement
the grid system, sustainable wood products, and recycled materials. Much of the site
has been left undisturbed and restored to natural growth for the preservation of the
surrounding woodlands.
