You could call this incredible Western North Carolina home a bit of a happy accident. That's because the owners — gallerists from Washington, D.C. — had
originally purchased it as an investment property while planning to build a new home as their main residence. It wasn't until they started exploring the
option of renovating this property that their imagination was delighted by the possibility of fulfilling their vision of home with a different perspective from
Amy Conner-Murphy of ACM Design.
Amy observed that the bones of the space could be reworked to achieve everything the owners wanted — and then some. Under the direction of Chris
Brock of Brock Builders, the renovation started with a top-to-bottom demolition of the existing structure — right down to the studs. New construction of a
three-story tower addition and a connecting bridge more than doubled the original footprint to seemlessly blend the old with the new.
The newly constructed addition provided an expansive gallery space to exhibit the owners' art collection at garden level along with a new garage at street
level and a private guest apartment above. A separate entrance to an elevator vestibule welcomes patrons to the gallery to view the new collections of
works while providing easy movement of larger art pieces and access to the guest apartment.
