The owner of this family retreat, located within the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, wanted the design to showcase the unobstructed
panorama of the Sawtooth Mountains while respecting the sensitive mountain meadow site. The home also needed to be wheelchair accessible, environmentally responsible, and
an inviting and enticing place for friends and family to connect with each other and the surroundings.
To achieve these goals, the design comprises three distinct, yet connected volumes. The volumes parallel the natural contours of the site, which minimized excavation and other
site disturbance. The shed roof pitch matches the view angle to the peaks of the Sawtooth Mountains, allowing clear vistas from deep within the main living areas.
A wall that extends from the main house links the recreational equipment storage building and further ties the retreat to the landscape. This element frames and bounds the entry,
diminishing the distinction between interior and exterior by forming a partially enclosed courtyard.
Outdoor living areas of differing micro-climates inhabit alcoves between the volumes, extending comfortable use of the exterior space from early spring through late fall. Extensive
glazing and sliding doors permit near seamlessness between these indoor and outdoor areas.
