David Wilds Patton Lighting Design
This special client, for whom we've provided extensive interior art lighting over
the years, decided to have a trellis built in their palm tree yard so they could
host dinners for up to 25 friends and family. An Anton Gormley statue, which
hadn't been prominently displayed before, was moved to center stage by
placing it in the middle of a black granite reflecting pool. The statue had to be
lit from both sides because the view was from the house and the trellis. Two
submersible lights on each side illuminated most of the statue — but, due to
its top-heavy shape, two additional spotlights from one side were needed to
fill in the gaps. The palms are lit from two opposite sides — leaving the front
in shadow — which emphasizes the cylindrical shape of the palm trunks.
The trellis was illuminated to highlight the columns and provide downward
lighting onto the central area where the tables would be set up. The trellis is
flanked by two beautifully illuminated mature olive trees whose shape and size
frame it perfectly.
