Masters of Landscape Lighting
ABOVE: A simple gate is softened by a sweeping arch of bamboo and layered
evergreen ground cover, offering both visual guidance and a gentle sense of
arrival as residents return from a walk through a private, immaculately maintained
communal garden in southeast London.
LEFT: The Prince Imperial Monument memorializes Napoleon Eugène Louis Jean
Joseph, heir to Napoleon III until the emperor's abdication in 1870. Killed during
the Zulu War while serving with the British Army, he once lived at nearby Camden
Place in Chislehurst, Kent, where Neil grew up. Tucked into a shallow woodland
recess along a busy cut-through road, the monument is easily overlooked. Carefully
placed lighting now draws the memorial and its immediate woodland setting out of
darkness, allowing it to be discovered rather than passed by.
FACING PAGE: The architectural design of this modern home and its gardens in
Berkhamsted, England, features stonework that closely matches the building,
complemented by traditional drystone walling throughout the landscape. Recessed
in-grade luminaires illuminate the hardscape, gently grazing the stone surfaces to
reveal texture and craftsmanship.
