31 David Brearey launched Hill Road Lighting Design (HRLD) in 1999 after spending 15 years as an electrician in San Francisco. It was during that time in The Golden City that he had the good fortune to learn from three exceptional mentors and friends: Janet Lennox Moyer, Mark Schulkamp, and Naomi Miller. HRLD operates as a company of one, personally installing every landscape lighting design while also offering interior lighting design and consultation. With training as a field biologist, David's approach to lighting balances the ability to see the big picture with an appreciation for fine detail. While he likes the expansiveness of the night, he also is drawn to creating more intimate scenes. Light can be used to shape space, to define how people move through it and how they experience it. That's what David loves about it. As a mentor and practitioner of aesthetic pruning for more than 25 years, he considers trees a central part of every design. As the largest works of art in the landscape, their structure and strength are revealed through light, inviting their majestic forms into the home and into the experience of the space.
