51 For Nite-Lite Landscape Lighting founder and principal designer Billy Coggins, landscape lighting has always been less about illumination and more about intention. Raised around the trades and drawn early to the intersection of craftsmanship and design, Billy began his career with a simple curiosity: why did some landscapes feel timeless at night, while others fell flat after sunset? The answer, he discovered, was rarely that they needed more light. It was that they needed better light. That belief became the foundation of Nite-Lite. Billy's work is informed by a deep commitment to education and professional rigor. He is an active member of the International Landscape Lighting Institute (iLLi) and a Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer (COLD) through the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) — credentials that reflect both technical mastery and adherence to established design principles. More importantly, they reinforce a philosophy rooted in discipline, hierarchy, and respect for the nighttime environment. The firm collaborates closely with homeowners, landscape architects, and builders to ensure that lighting is fully integrated into the broader design intent. Installation is treated with the same rigor as design, recognizing that precision in aiming, shielding, and placement ultimately determines whether a project succeeds. In a field where excess is common, Nite-Lite chooses clarity. Where brightness is often mistaken for impact, the firm relies on contrast, shadow, and hierarchy. Because when lighting is done well, it does not announce itself. It simply belongs. NITE-LITE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING LONG ISLAND, NY LEFT: From the beginning, Nite-Lite was built on the idea that light is a design language, one that requires patience, restraint, and precision. Architecture is revealed through controlled grazing and selective highlights, avoiding uniform washes in favor of depth and texture. Landscape elements are carefully illuminated to complement and enhance the setting for a welcoming, peaceful effect. FACING PAGE: The photography of this project revealed unexpected vantage points — quiet corners where the lighting reads differently and beautifully. But the most impactful element is the contrast between the soft moonlighting grazing the conifers and the warm accent lighting animating the maples. High-color- rendering fixtures allow the subtle shifts in tone to remain intact, preserving depth and atmosphere. Photography by Billy Coggins
