6 Masters of Landscape Lighting Foreword Foreword Landscape lighting transforms garden spaces in ways that are both subtle and profound. It gives the designer the power to hide and to reveal, to guide the eye, and to reshape how a landscape is experienced after the sun sets. Familiar gardens become entirely new realms at night—quiet, immersive, and often magical. Thoughtfully applied light extends interior living spaces outward, reconnecting people to the landscapes they love long after darkness settles in. When lighting is truly effective, it often goes unnoticed. Instead of calling attention to itself, it invites people to linger, to move more slowly, and to experience their surroundings with renewed curiosity. The night can be mysterious — even unsettling — for many. Skillful lighting provides safety and security, but it does so through beauty rather than intrusion. It transforms darkness not by erasing it, but by shaping it, allowing shadow and illumination to exist in balance. Landscape lighting, as a formal design discipline, is still relatively young. With roots stretching back only about sixty years, it remains an evolving field, one filled with experimentation, innovation, and enormous creative potential. Unlike architecture or landscape design, its work exists in a fleeting state, revealed only after dusk and rarely documented in lasting form. Despite the growing sophistication of the craft, the art of night lighting has never been comprehensively captured in a single book — until now. Masters of Landscape Lighting brings together the work of designers from across the United States and beyond, offering a rare glimpse into how light is used to sculpt space, emphasize form, and create emotional connection after dark. These projects represent not only technical expertise, but also deep sensitivity to nature, architecture, and the human experience of place. Each designer featured here approaches light as a material—one that must be carefully measured, restrained, and respected. A few years ago, I reached out to Brian Carabet, founder of Inspired Intermedia, with a simple question: Would he consider creating a book dedicated entirely to night lighting? Without hesitation, he agreed. What followed is this collection — a compendium of night magic created by some of the most thoughtful lighting leaders working today. These pages capture a moment in time, reflecting how expert designers, technicians, and manufacturers currently see, shape, and honor the darkness. This book is both a celebration and an invitation. A celebration of mastery in a field still coming into its own, and an invitation to experience landscapes in a new way: quietly, thoughtfully, and under the transformative power of light. Enjoy.
