145 "Let there be light!" –Genesis 1:3 "Let there be light!" –Genesis 1:3 The opening to the best-selling book of all time chooses to focus on the incredible difference between light and dark, right and wrong, good and evil. Light is a metaphor for so many of life's dichotomies. Light can tell a story. Light can reveal truth. Light can celebrate greatness. Light can provide warmth. It can guide an army or entertain a kien. For over two decades, the team at Light Up Columbus has used light to bring joy to thousands of people. Great lighting changes people's lives. It affects their mood, shapes the perceptions of their home and yard, and enhances safety. Light can be a beacon, a warning, a celebration, or a marker. Every scene we design is intended to evoke emotion. We are constantly practicing, learning, and working to improve our craft. We cannot properly light a space without first understanding how the space is used, the predominant viewing angles, and how you want visitors to feel at night in that environment. Once you have proper direction, creating layering and texture with lighting is a key to revealing nature's true beauty. Assign values of importance to elements in the scene and then light them accordingly. Using brushstrokes of light vs buckets will allow the most beautiful details of the scene to emerge. Eleftheria Deko (considered to be one of the greatest lighting designers on earth) lit the Acropolis, the Temple of Poseidon, and the Opening Ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games. My friend and mentor changed my life when she said, "light without shadows, is like music without pauses." My aspiration is to use the seven elements of lighting like the seven notes of an octave to create a visual symphony that does not "just illuminate the eyes, but the brain and the soul." I am honored to share some of our favorite projects in the following pages. Hopefully they can inspire you to imagine what is possible at your own sanctuary.
