ABOVE: Sometimes, the smallest tree can have the biggest impact. Because the canopy
is so much lower to the ground, the light reflects more than on the surrounding trunks,
creating a foreground and background that provides depth. Chris finds himself rooting for
the little tree to one day grow as strong as his surrounding brothers. This space evokes
the emotion of hope.
RIGHT AND FACING PAGE: Most experienced lighting designers can immediately envision
what is possible at night. Eleftheria Deko said it best: "We see a space not as it is, but with
the potential of what it could be." This is what Chris believes separates the true artists
from the contractors in this field.
The first time Chris drove around the bend in the client's driveway — revealing this pond
— he was overwhelmed with excitement of what could be. He knew that on a still night,
properly lit trees would reflect like a mirror on the water and create true art. LUC had to
exercise restraint not to light all the trees, and instead chose to leave the background
dark to help the main group of trees really stand alone as the celebrity of the scene.
