A 15-minute drive from the USS Arizona Memorial and 15 miles northwest of Honolulu, Waikele
Country Club has been voted the No. 1 public course on the island of Oahu, boasting the sort
of playing surfaces you'd expect to find at a private club in addition to a handsome clubhouse
and restaurant that receives as much acclaim as the golf.
The hugely popular 6,663-yard layout overlooks Pearl Harbor, and the volcanic cone of
Diamond Head can be seen in the far distance. The course opened in 1993 and was designed
by Californian architect, Ted Robinson. Attractive, strategically-positioned water features
at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes explain how Robinson earned his nickname "The King of
Waterscapes".
Long hitters may be tempted to reach the green from the tee, but it's a big ask to carry the
beautiful water feature and stay on the putting surface. The green does slope from back to
front which might help your ball decelerate before running into the back bunker, but are you
sure it's worth the risk?
A far more sensible play is to aim right of the pond and come up just short of the pot bunkers
cut into the bank at the end of the fairway. You'll leave yourself a shot of about 50 yards and
have a great chance of making birdie.
