No. 2 at Pinehurst has been the site of more golf championships than any other course in
America. Not only will the U.S. Open Championship be back in 2029 but is on the schedule for
2035, 2041, and 2047.
There are many opportunities for just about any hole on Pinehurst No. 2 to be its Signature
Hole but when it comes to memorable and historical moments (think Payne Stewart in 1999 and
Bryson DeChambeau 2024) the 18th hole at No. 2 can't be beat.
As a relatively short par 4, the 18th is a masterful design with unique characteristics that only
Donald Ross could have imagined. From the initial tee shot you are confronted with an elevated
fairway which you will want to carry to the crest of the hill. Staying to the left side of fairway will
at give you the best chance of getting to the green in two.
If that's accomplished the approach shot is no easy bargain either, to a large green with a
bunker left, a waste area short right, and a pot bunker long right. Though a large green, it has a
dip in the middle, plateaus towards the back and falls off on every side — typical Ross designs.
The good news is your walk to the green includes the view of Pinehurst's iconic clubhouse —
a spectacular view that reminds you just how amazing your day was on this incredible golf
course.
When you have finished your round, this would be the perfect time to go take a photo with the
Payne Stewart statue that overlooks the 18th green.
