I
osif 's parents, Shlomo Volsun and Hava Brandes,
grew up just a few doors apart in Gorodok,
Ukraine, a small village or shtetl about 40 miles
northeast of Kamenets-Podolsk, Ukraine, not far
om the Rumanian border. "Gorodok" (Russian)
and "Horodok" (Ukrainian) both mean small village
("gorod"). Gorodok is known by a variety of names,
including Graiding. Shlomo's parents lived in what
seems today like an idyllic village, where Jews were
ee to worship and make an honest living. Within
their generation, it became dangerous to be a Jew in
this region, and within Shlomo's generation,
Jews had to flee or be killed.
