The next morning, a third event broke their hearts. David delivered the terrible news to Rosa and Moisey: Yakov was dead. He had been killed in a car accident on a Toronto highway, dying immediately of a broken neck. Yakov had a big funeral attended by many of his iends. He was buried at the Jewish cemetery in Toronto. Aer the heart attack and his son's death, Moisey's health declined. He lost weight and an abscess on his leg became infected. Eventually the infection became so serious that Rosa called an ambulance, despite Moisey's resistance. Rosa believes the hospital made a number of medical errors that cost Moisey not only his leg but eventually his life. "They gave Moisey insulin shots and anti-cholesterol treatment," she says, adding that, in her view, cholesterol is good for the immune system. "Soon I saw that his leg was turning black," she says, indicating a lack of blood flow to the leg. Her husband had gangrene of the leg, a critical condition that required immediate amputation; otherwise the gangrene would spread to his other organs and kill him. Nevertheless, Moisey refused amputation. He was moved to a Jewish nursing home and there, Moisey Gregorivich Udler, beloved husband of Rosa Volsun, died on May 12, 2006.
