Every great tradition begins with someone who paid close attention. To proportion. To craft.
To the way a room makes you feel when you cross its threshold for the first time — and
the ten-thousandth time. Traditional design is the accumulated wisdom of centuries of
beautiful living, translated into homes that are built not for a moment, but for a lifetime.
The rooms in this chapter are steeped in that wisdom. Hand-plastered walls carry the
warmth of old Europe. Millwork is designed with the same care as furniture, because in a
truly traditional interior, architecture and furnishing are inseparable. Fabrics are layered —
silk against linen, velvet against wool — in combinations that reward close inspection. And
always, beneath the beauty, there is a sense of permanence. These are rooms that will not
need reinventing in five years, because they were designed with an understanding of what
endures.
But traditional design, as practiced by the designers gathered here, is never static. It
breathes and evolves, absorbing new materials and contemporary comfort while holding
fast to the principles that have always defined it: quality, proportion, and the conviction
that a home should be the most personal place on earth. These rooms do not simply look
beautiful. They feel like home.
