63 BRECKENRIDGE GOLF CLUB - BEAVER COURSE GOLF CLUB - BEAVER COURSE PAR 3 ● 199 YARDS BRECKENRIDGE, CO The phrase "You can't get enough of a good thing" could have been written about Breckenridge Golf Club in scenic Summit County, Colorado. The municipally owned facility, about 80 miles southwest of Denver, boasts 27 stunning Jack Nicklaus-designed holes, 9,300 feet above sea level. And though that would appear to be plenty of golf, you really just want more. The website panoramas instantly draw you in but, of course, there's nothing like actually being there and seeing the place for yourself. This is mountain golf at its best, taking full advantage of the scenery without forcing excessive climbs or drops on the golfer fortunate enough to be experiencing it. The first nine holes (Bear) opened in 1985, with the second nine (Beaver) added two years later. Their success prompted the Town of Breckenridge to add a third nine (Elk) in 2001. Play them all and you'll have a hard time deciding which you like best, and really any number of holes could have made it into this book. Choosing the Beaver Course's beautiful par-3 9th hole wasn't actually that difficult, however. With a beaver pond to the left of the large but relatively shallow green, and the Tenmile Range and Buffalo Mountain in the distance, this is one hole you'll remember for a very long time. You've just played an excellent split-fairway par 5 that could as easily have been featured here, but as you board the next tee and take in the challenge that awaits, you'll nod your head in agreement. There's plenty of safe ground short and right of the green if you feel the near-200-yard par-3 is a little too much to handle. Confident golfers who want to fire straight at the pin will likely need to clear a narrow stretch of water and a good-sized bunker to get there, depending on where the hole is cut. Wherever the pin is make a three at this gorgeous hole and you'll exit the green justly happy.
