93 Boyne opened its first championship golf course in Michigan—the Robert Trent Jones-designed Heather course at The Highlands—in 1966. The company, founded by Everett Kircher 20 years prior, now owns and operates 11 superb courses across three resorts in Michigan, and though everyone has their favorite, the Links/Quarry combination at Bay Harbor is the flagship layout. Bay Harbor Golf Club comprises three nine-hole courses—Links, Quarry, and Preserve— located three miles west of the striking Inn at Bay Harbor. With three nines, there are three possible 18-hole routings: Quarry/Preserve, Preserve/Links, and Links/Quarry, which covers some of the most interesting and memorable land of any Boyne course. That it also provides the best views of Lake Michigan certainly helps boost its popularity. The Links nine opened in 1997 and was designed by renowned architect Arthur Hills. Built on bluffs and sand dunes, it's obviously reminiscent of a Scottish seaside course. The Quarry nine was built on the site of a former shale quarry and cement plant that closed in the 1980s. The environmental reclamation project that followed helped turn what had been an industrial site into world-class golf. Crooked Tree Golf Club, across the street, and the five nearby courses at The Highlands, plus two at Boyne Mountain, are also part of BOYNE Golf's impressive collection. A glorious par-5 stretching along the cliffs overlooking Lake Michigan, the 7th on the Links nine is certainly reachable in two for bigger hitters. Most, however, will be content to avoid the bunkers left and right with their second shot and leave a 90-yard pitch into a green that slopes toward the water. As with all great holes, recording a par is not overly demanding, but there's plenty of potential trouble lurking and everything from three to eight or worse can happen here.
