153 BETHPAGE BLACK COURSE BETHPAGE BLACK COURSE PAR 5 ● 517 YARDS FARMINGDALE, NY Originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast, Bethpage Black is one of five golf courses within Bethpage State Park. Owned by New York State, it is a vast property that includes indoor tennis courts, a polo field, a driving range, and four other golf courses: Yellow, Blue, Red, and Green, with the first tee of each almost adjacent to one another. Bethpage Black underwent several renovations over the years, the most notable by Rees Jones prior to the 2002 U.S. Open. It was in 2002 when Tiger won here and put "The Black'" on the global golf map. Since 2002, it has hosted the U.S. Open, PGA TOUR events, the PGA Championship, and most recently the Ryder Cup. The dogleg left 4th hole may be one of the most majestic and daunting holes on the golf course, featuring over 7.5 acres of sand. It is long! It plays uphill most of the way, and from tee to green, some of the largest bunkers on the course come into play. Except for the longest hitters, from the tee box the fairway bunker on the left side must be avoided—play here is to the right. Next, you will have to navigate your way with a blind second shot up to the elevated plateau of the fairway. After clearing the massive bunker, which traverses across most of the entire fairway, it is another blind shot to one of the only greens on the golf course that slopes from front to back. Clearing the bunkers that surround the green is essential. To avoid these bunkers, a safe option is to aim to the right. Similar to many of Bethpage Black's greens, this one is relatively flat. The approach from the right side may be narrow, but it allows for a longer shot into the green. Scoring a par here is an excellent achievement. Every golfer should add Bethpage Black to their bucket list. Architect: Joseph Burbeck Photography by Gary Kellner Imaging Scan to book a tee time H O L E 4 th BETHPAGE STATE PARK
