8 PERSPECTIVES ON GOLF COURSE DESIGN Doug Carrick, Carrick Design Inc. Founded in 1985 by Douglas Carrick, Carrick Design Inc. has established itself as one of Canada's leading golf course architectural firms. Doug feels, "All great golf courses possess distinctive features, intriguing character, a unique atmosphere, a tremendous variety, and they encourage creative or thoughtful play among golfers of all abilities. is is what we strive to achieve with every course we design." Cynthia Dye McGarey, Dye Designs Group For over 100 years, the Dye family has been designing golf courses, starting with the "Dye original," Urbana Country Club in Ohio. e Dye portfolio is among the most impressive in golf. Cynthia Dye McGarey has been furthering the keen Dye eye with award-winning designs of her own. "I want to create golf courses that are integrated with nature. My designs focus on giving each hole its own identity. Signature holes draw from site-specific features in the landscape: rolling hills, streams, wetlands, and specimen trees that mold the strategy and create stunning views. Every detail from tee to green encourages strategic thinking. When golfers play my courses, I want them to feel challenged — and not just remember their scores, but feel a deep appreciation for their surroundings." Tom Lehman, Lehman Design Group "I've always believed that a golf course should prioritize enjoyment. While it's important to challenge the best players, the course should also be enjoyable for everyone else. Golf is not meant to be a punishment. I want players to be able to find their balls and have a chance to recover, encouraging them to think strategically rather than overpowering the course. Strategy and position are key. A signature hole shouldn't feel forced; it should naturally fit the landscape. e best holes reveal themselves organically, emerging from the terrain rather than being created for dramatic effect. e land should dictate the design, not the other way around. Ultimately, the best courses feel natural, fair, and timeless—places where every golfer leaves wanting to return."
