FOREWORD Growing up in Oregon gave me a healthy appreciation for every aspect of the game and helped me learn how to hit just about every shot in the bag: high shots; low shots; hooks; slices; bump and run shots; uphill, downhill, and side hill shots; and shots played in high winds and heavy rain. While most every region in the union brags about the "golf IQ" of their residents, I can confidently say that golfers in the Pacific Northwest have the know-how to compete on every course throughout the world. My first experiences with golf were all family outings with my parents, brothers, and sister, where I had the chance to play classic courses like Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Eugene Country Club, Portland Golf Club, and Waverley Country Club. Golf was a game to be shared and enjoyed, and my parents made sure that even while in the competitive arena, we were taught first and foremost to respect the game: the rules, the etiquette, and, most importantly, the people who played it. My first memories of professional golf in the area were of the Portland Opens and the Alcan Golfer of the Year Championship, both played at the legendary Portland Golf Club. From the 1947 Ryder Cup matches to the LPGA's Safeway Classic, the many USGA Championships, the uniquely fun Fred Meyer Challenge events, and the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay near Tacoma, professional golf in the Pacific Northwest has been as strong and varied as anywhere in the United States. This landmark collection showcases the history, excitement, and diversity of golf experiences in the Pacific Northwest. Is there a more photographed hole than Coeur d'Alene Golf Resort's floating 14th? Or any more precise a course than Washington's Sahalee Country Club, with its iconic towering firs? From high plains desert courses in Oregon to mountain layouts in Washington and Idaho to the breathtakingly beautiful tracks on the Oregon coast, the golf experience is as different as you can get—all of it fun and rewarding. Yours truly, Peter Jacobsen Peter Jacobsen foreword They say "home is where your heart is." For me, as a professional golfer who travels constantly and now makes my family's home in Utah, Ontario will always be home, both in a personal sense and as a golfer. I have learned over the years that the more you travel, the more incredible places you visit, and the more golf courses you play around the world, the more you appreciate how those early influences have made you who you are. From first developing my love of the game on the driving range at Huron Oaks Golf Club in Sarnia to anticipating family vacations and golf with my dad and brothers at Taboo in Muskoka, Ontario's great golf courses have always had a huge influence on me, even when putting out to win the Masters. Ontario is blessed with beautiful and spectacular countryside. This, coupled with some brilliant course designs, has helped make our province a golfer's paradise. With more than 800 golf courses to choose from, and 12 of the top 20 courses in Canada located in Ontario, there is quite literally a style, course, and challenge for everyone. I have seen firsthand how much players on Tour have enjoyed playing the Canadian Open at courses like Hamilton Golf & Country Club, along with occasions to play great courses like The National Golf Club of Canada and St. George's Golf and Country Club, and I am always proud to say that this is home for me. Within the pages of Spectacular Golf Ontario are chronicled the magnificent courses and holes that have helped put the province on the golfing map. Whether located near a bustling big city or tucked away in Ontario's dazzling countryside, each of these courses possesses something special. For those who enjoy traveling to play some of the world's great golf courses, no list would be complete without a trip to Ontario. For those who call Ontario home, enjoy the fact that you have some of the best golf courses in the world right at your fingertips.
