golf association of ontario Welcome to Spectacular Golf Ontario, a publication that we at the Golf Association of Ontario believe showcases the incredibly diverse selection of fantastic golf courses across the province; courses that are second to none. Opportunities to experience great golf are available to Ontarians and visitors in every part of the province. Spectacular Golf Ontario provides you with an enjoyable and memorable trip through some of Ontario's finest golf courses. The Golf Association of Ontario is pleased to have the opportunity to be part of this beautiful publication. In addition to providing a lasting memory of our golf courses, our involvement will help in efforts to grow participation in the sport, assist the performance of our golfers, and support the Ontario golf industry. Specific grassroots and development programs will all benefit from the exposure that the GAO receives in Spectacular Golf Ontario, including Golf in Schools, an interactive introduction to golf that reaches children in more than 800 schools across the province, and CN Future Links, a program that engages 6,000 children annually in the game. The GAO also helps prepare Ontario's best young golfers for the national and international competitive stages through the Team Ontario program, which develops the champions of tomorrow who will inspire new participants to take up the game. I trust that as you browse through this wonderful book you will have an opportunity to see some of your favorite courses, your favorite golf holes, and perhaps find a few new ones that will make it onto your personal must-play list. Golf is a game for the ages—a game for all ages—and Ontario offers wonderful golf courses for all who wish to play. Enjoy Spectacular Golf Ontario. Dave Mills Executive Director Golf Association of Ontario ALBERTA GoLF ASSoCIATIoN Photographs by Alberta Golf File Photography Alberta, known as Wild Rose Country, is famous for its embodiment of the Canadian West, the Calgary Stampede, and the timeless beauty of the Rocky Mountains. And for the past century, from the Peace Country region to the US border, from the Foothills to the Great Plains, Alberta has earned an international reputation for spectacular golf courses. The Alberta Golf Association was formed way back in 1908. Records show that during that first year, the AGA staged long drive competitions. Remarkably, given the equipment of the day, Mr. G. Shaw won the men's division with a prodigious clout that travelled a full 270 yards. Miss Mathieson captured the women's prize with a very respectable drive of 160 yards. Great tee shots have been flying around the province ever since. When the AGA, now known as Alberta Golf, was incorporated as a society in 1912 to better serve its member clubs and help grow the fledgling game, there were just five clubs in the organization: the Lethbridge Country Club, Fort Macleod Golf Club, Calgary Golf and Country Club, Calgary's St. Andrews Golf Club, and the Edmonton Country Club. Today there are more than 250 member clubs with more than 60,000 individual members. The game and the number of superb golf courses have also grown in every corner of Alberta over the past 100 years. And with outstanding events like the LPGA Tour's CN Canadian Women's Open, Canadian Tour events, and Skins Games, golf in Wild Rose Country just keeps getting better, as the spectacular courses included in this volume dramatically illustrate.
