THIS PAGE & FACING PAGE: As the central gathering space of the home, this renovated
family room embodies European Texas living—honoring its setting and rural
surroundings without relying on predictable Texas Hill Country design tropes.
The most transformative architectural feature became the ceiling. We designed a
custom geometric coffered ceiling to emphasize the room's volume while introducing
warmth, texture, and architectural interest. The pattern creates movement across
the ceiling plane and establishes a refined European influence that immediately
distinguishes the room from a traditional Hill Country aesthetic.
To further lighten the space, the original limestone fireplace surround was removed and
replaced with an oversized cast stone fireplace. The new surround feels cleaner, more
sculptural, and more transitional in character while maintaining the scale appropriate
for the room. Custom built-ins flank the fireplace and feature a ribbed detailing motif
that repeats throughout the home, creating continuity.
We intentionally designed the furnishings to soften the room while preserving its
sense of permanence. Some of the existing darker pieces, including a leather sofa,
were balanced by a layered palette of lighter woods, warm neutrals, rich textures, and
carefully selected accents in blue-green, russet, and apricot tones.
The channel-tufted velvet lounge chairs serve as a focal point, with their soft color
providing a transition point from the entry into the room's palette.
